In a rap landscape dominated by autotune, trap, and big-label pop-rap, Undagawds are an outlier: a strictly boom-bap, vinyl-first, "poetry on beats" project run out of a small imprint. The whole point — and the line they lean on — is that despite all the mess and dislocation, music makes everything else irrelevant.

For the uninitiated, 

Undagawds are a transatlantic hip-hop duo based in Frankfurt am Main, Germany, made up of American MC Peter Manns (originally from Cambridge, Massachusetts) and Russian/Siberian producer Thelonious Coltrane. The name itself flips "underground" into its own thing — a wink at the crate-digging, sample-heavy, jazz-rap tradition they operate in.

Their sound is pure new-school boom bap with a soulful backbone. Thelonious Coltrane's beats swing between dusty jazz loops and warm soulful grooves (the head-nodders Looking for Words and Cognac) and harder, classic East Coast-style bangers (Jump Up). Peter Manns rides them with a cool, considered delivery — thoughtful bars, clean pocket, no wasted syllables.

Lyrically, the duo leans personal. A lot of it reads like dispatches from a young immigrant's life: the awkwardness of trading Cambridge for Frankfurt, childhood memories, staying on the straight path when everything around you is loud, and the small wins that keep a man grounded. There's room for lighter fare too — girls, funk, parties, weed — but it never tips into caricature.
